On May 5, 1996, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Azerbaijan officially began its work in Baku.
Although official diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Azerbaijan were established on February 6, 1992, our interaction has much deeper roots. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, during the struggle for independence, Ukrainians already had a diplomatic presence on Azerbaijani soil.
The first Ukrainian consular office in Baku was opened in September 1918, shortly after the proclamation of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. On September 21, 1919, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the ADR recognized the head of the Ukrainian community in Baku, Mr. Holovan, as Acting Vice Consul of the Ukrainian People's Republic.
Another important step came on February 8, 1919, when Ivan Kraskovskyi presented his credentials to the leadership of the ADR. In October of the same year, a full-fledged Ukrainian diplomatic mission arrived in Baku. This became one of the first examples of genuine interstate cooperation between our countries.
After Ukraine restored its independence in 1991, Azerbaijan was among the first countries to recognize its statehood. Since then, our relations have steadily developed on the basis of friendship, mutual respect, and strategic partnership.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Azerbaijan was opened on May 5, 1996. Initially, it operated from rented premises at the Azerbaijan Hotel, and since October 15, 2001, it has been located in its own building on Yusif Vezir Chamanzaminli Street — named after the prominent Azerbaijani statesman and the first ambassador of the ADR to Ukraine, Yusif Vezir Chamanzaminli. This symbolically underscores the historical connection and mutual respect between our peoples.
We thank everyone who helped shape — and continues to shape — this shared history together.
