Last week in Baku, ahead of Ukraine’s Independence Day, a special gathering of the Ukrainian community of Azerbaijan and friends of Ukraine took place near the monument to Taras Shevchenko, in the square that now bears the name of the great Ukrainian poet, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
Together with the third President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, Chairman of the Azerbaijan–Ukraine Working Group of the Milli Majlis and MP Alibala Maharramzade, representatives of the Ukrainian community and friends of Ukraine, we paid tribute to the memory of the Great Kobzar.
It was a gathering of special significance — about Ukraine, its history and culture, about our unity, and about those who are defending the freedom and independence of our country today.
During the event, the Military Attaché of the Embassy of Ukraine was presented with an award from the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
A particularly memorable moment was the joint performance of the National Anthem of Ukraine and Taras Petrynenko’s song “Ukrayino”, accompanied by the unfurling of a large Ukrainian State Flag. The blue and yellow flag became a symbol of the unity of Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine, united by their love for our country.
Today, the square that now bears the name of Taras Shevchenko is a special place in Baku, symbolizing the strong friendship and partnership between Ukraine and Azerbaijan, as well as mutual respect for our history, culture and shared aspiration for freedom.
And today, 24 August, the team of the Embassy of Ukraine solemnly performed the National Anthem of Ukraine and raised the State Flag to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
Ambassador of Ukraine Yuriy Husyev sincerely congratulated all Ukrainians, friends and partners of Ukraine on Independence Day.
“Today, we especially remember our fallen Heroes, express our gratitude and bow to all our Defense Forces, and extend our appreciation to the Republic of Azerbaijan, our international allies and partners for their support. With faith, we look to the future — a future without war and daily Russian attacks, without occupation and the abduction of children, without daily pain and suffering…
…A European, successful and secure future for an independent Ukraine!” Ambassador Yuriy Husyev said.
Happy Independence Day!
